Hemp can be utilized to produce building materials in a variety of ways.
Currently the most widely used form is as bio-crete. In this form Hemp hurd (chopped stalk of the plant )
Is mixed with various binders, lime being the most common, to form a cellulose cement which is used for walls, and floors and also moulded furniture. The advantages Hemp bio-crete has over concrete is significant.
Hemp bio-crete is lighter, has more flexible strength, breathes better and has superior thermal and acoustic properties. Also Hempcrete is an efficient carbon storage material with the average house sequestering 30 to fifty tones of carbon.
Hemp hurd can also be used to produce particle board which is stronger and has more flexible strength than the wood chip equivalent. It also has better thermal and acoustic properties than wood chip board and is insect resistant,
